DRESS & TEXTILES by Rachel Worth

£4.95

Dorset’s smocks and unmistakable ‘knob’ buttons are the most famous examples of a whole range of once flourishing textile industries. The great downland flocks provided woollen cloth. Flax grown in the western vales was woven into linen. In the east, woad was turned into a rich blue dye. Sherborne and Gillingham were famed for their silk, Cranborne for its ribbons, Lyme Regis and Blandford for lace-making, Poole and Wimborne for their stockings. Shaftesbury stood at the centre of the button trade. Before cheap ready-made clothing, hand-sewn cotton sun-bonnets and embroidered smocks were as familiar a part of the rural wardrobe as leggings and stout boots.
