The tiny fragments of Dorset grassland that remain rich in wildlife are widely scattered. They range from ancient pasture in the clay vales to the herb-strewn turf of the chalk downland, from a handful of precious patches of acid grassland on the rim of the eastern heaths, to traditional meadows like those at Kingcombe in the west of the county as well as road verges and churchyards. Dorset’s downs, meadows and pastures provide a home for some of our best-loved plants and animals – the skylark, early purple orchid, delightfully named corky-fruited water dropwort, and great drifts of cowslips on the downland slopes.
