Woodland in Dorset is a diversity of mixed plantations, conifers, beech belts, deciduous woods and copses. Ancient oak and hazel woods are scarce, but have long and interesting histories associated with Royal Forests, monastic estates, medieval deer parks and wood pasture. All the surviving ancient woods are an important haven for wildlife, and are home to a wonderful variety of plants and animals, beetles, birds, butterflies, flowers, fungi, lichens and mammals, many of them rare. A fresh awareness of the value of old woodland is encouraging new plantings of broadleaved trees and a renaissance of the traditional skills that gave Dorset’s woods their character.
