Dorset’s ‘lost’ villages and hamlets tell the story of an important but largely invisible part of its history. Over 250 abandoned Dorset villages are known to have existed, many more lie unrecorded. The largest, Milton Abbas, lies beneath a lake. The most recent, Tyneham, remains haunted by the events that led to it being evacuated. Others survive as isolated farmsteads or as humps and bumps in a field. The Black Death, changes in farming, the Dissolution of the Monasteries, enclosure, the building of country houses, the recent expansion of the towns – even storms and coastal raids – all have played their part in creating a patchwork of ‘lost’ villages that provide a tantalizing glimpse into Dorset’s past.
