Two centuries of agricultural change and the growth of the towns have transformed Dorset’s Georgian landscape. Machinery has replaced the army of labourers, leaving the countryside a much lonelier place, and the villages inhabited by people who no longer work the land. Yet by using contemporary illustrations and concentrating on those who lived in the eighteenth century, Jo Draper has superbly captured the character of its Georgian past. Architecturally, there is still much to enjoy; from humble thatched cottages to country churches and classical mansions – whilst Blandford is now a World Heritage site justifiably admired as one of the most complete Georgian market towns in England.
