The Regency period of the early nineteenth century was one of great contrast in Dorset. The old order was threatened by agricultural riots and hunger for reform. Elegant resorts like Weymouth and Lyme Regis sat uneasily alongside a violent society and savage penal system. Poole’s bustling quays concealed a world in which smuggling was commonplace. England was starting to change, but Dorset was left behind by the industrial revolution and became a rural backwater. Away from the towns, most of its population were farm labourers. On starvation wages, leading to Dorset taking the centre of the national stage following the persecution of the Tolpuddle Martyrs in 1834.
