The Vale’s capital is Sturminster Newton, known locally as ‘Stur’, but it owes its character to its lush grasslands and the countless brooks and streams that drain into the River Stour. Wide verges line ancient lanes leading to isolated farmhouses and honey-coloured stone and thatch villages.
