The Blackmore Vale is Dorset at its most intimate and down-to-earth. Much was once a medieval Royal Forest, and even today Thomas Hardy’s ‘Vale of the Little Dairies’ remains a patchwork of hedges, woodland and small fields. The Vale’s capital is Sturminster Newton, known locally as ‘Stur’, but it owes its character to its lush grasslands and the countless brooks and streams that drain into the River Stour. Wide verges line ancient lanes leading to isolated farmhouses and honey-coloured stone and thatch villages. Hilary Townsend was born in the Vale, and lives there still, bringing a wonderfully personal touch to what is the first guide solely to the Blackmore Vale to be published.
