No periods in Dorset’s past have been so packed with pure history as those of the Tudors and Stuarts. Exhilarating, dramatic and eventful – they transformed Dorset. The Dissolution of the Monasteries shifted wealth and power to a new landowning class of merchants and adventurers. The struggle between Catholic and Protestant brought persecution to both. The Elizabethan age saw the threat of Spanish invasion. Dorset was the scene of bitter fighting between Royalists and Parliament throughout the Civil War, as well as the setting of the Clubmens’ Rising. Finally the optimism of the Restoration surrendered to the Duke of Monmouth’s doomed Rebellion and the terrible price of failure exacted at the Bloody Assizes.
